How much does a website cost in South Africa? 2026 price guide

By Kasisite. Published 7 October 2026, updated 8 October 2026. 12 minute read.

The short answer: A basic website in South Africa costs about R1 500 to R5 000 once off. A custom small business website costs about R8 000 to R40 000. An online store costs R13 000 to R60 000, and large stores cost up to R200 000 or more.

On top of the build price, plan for about R30 to R300 a month for hosting and R50 to R200 a year for a .co.za domain.

These figures come from South African price guides published in 2025 and 2026. Prices vary a lot, so treat them as ranges, not quotes. This guide shows what changes the price, what you pay every month and what to ask before you hand over any money. We are Kasisite, a web design studio that has built more than 50 websites, so we also show our own prices at the end.

Website cost in South Africa by type of site

The biggest price driver is the kind of site you need. A one-page site costs far less than a store with a checkout. This table shows the once-off build prices that South African guides report.

What affects the price of a website?

Two quotes for "a five-page website" can differ by R20 000. These are the reasons:

  • Number of pages. Some developers charge by the page, from R200 to R950 a page.
  • Template or custom design. A template-based design costs about R3 000 to R7 000. A custom design phase alone starts from about R10 000.
  • Your words and photos. Copywriting costs R500 to R1 500 a page. Stock photos, photography or video cost R2 000 to R10 000 or more.
  • SEO set-up. Some quotes include page titles, descriptions and a clean structure. Others charge for them separately.
  • A way to edit the site yourself. A content management system adds to the build price but saves money later.
  • Ongoing support. Some prices include support. Others bill it later.
  • Who builds it. Freelancers charge about R300 to R1 000 an hour. Agencies price the whole project.

Ongoing website costs: hosting, domain, SSL and maintenance

The build price is only part of the cost. Every website needs a domain name, hosting and an SSL certificate, and most need someone to look after them.

What you pay for to get a website online and keep it there
  1. DomainR50 to R200 a yearYour web address. A .com costs R180 to R320 a year.
  2. HostingR30 to R300 a monthKeeps your site online. Most small sites need R60 to R150.

How much does a website cost per month in South Africa?

There are three kinds of monthly cost, and people often mix them up:

  • Hosting only: about R30 to R300 a month.
  • Maintenance plans: R199 to R2 000 a month, for updates, backups and security.
  • Pay-monthly website deals: R299 to R799 a month. These bundle the design, hosting and some support into one fee.

A pay-monthly deal looks cheap, but it never ends. One cost guide notes that these deals can cost more than a once-off build over 24 to 36 months. Multiply the monthly fee by 36 before you sign.

What a monthly website fee adds up to
Monthly feeAfter 12 monthsAfter 24 monthsAfter 36 months
R299 a monthR3 588R7 176R10 764
R499 a monthR5 988R11 976R17 964
R799 a monthR9 588R19 176R28 764

Ask what the monthly fee pays for. If it covers real work every month, such as updates, SEO and new content, it can be worth it. If it only covers hosting, which costs R30 to R150, you are paying too much.

How much does an online store cost in South Africa?

An online store costs more than a normal website because it needs product pages, a cart, a checkout and a payment gateway. It also has to be kept secure and up to date. Guides put the build at R13 000 to R60 000, and large stores cost far more. Hosting for a store runs about R150 to R300 or more a month.

You also pay your payment provider on every sale. PayFast, for example, has no monthly fee and charges per transaction (prices exclude VAT):

PayFast transaction fees (excluding VAT)
Payment methodFee
Credit and cheque card3.2% + R2.00
Apple Pay, Google Pay and Samsung Pay3.2% + R2.00
Instant EFT2.0% (minimum R2.00)
Capitec Pay2.0% (minimum R2.00)
Payout to your bankR8.70 per payout
RefundR2.00 per refund

Worked example: A R500 order paid by card costs R18 in fees (3.2% is R16, plus R2), which is 3.6%. The same order paid by instant EFT costs R10. Other providers, such as Yoco, publish their own rates, so compare them before you choose.

Small shops can also start without a full cart. A product page with a payment link or a "Order on WhatsApp" button costs less to build and less to run.

What should a small business website include?

Most South Africans get online on a phone. The communications regulator ICASA reports that over 75% of South Africans used mobile data to get online in 2024, and only 17.4% have a regular home connection. That makes phone-first design a must, not an extra.

Before you compare prices, make sure every quote covers these basics:

  • A domain name, such as yourbusiness.co.za, registered in your name.
  • Hosting, so the site stays online.
  • An SSL certificate, so browsers show the padlock instead of a warning.
  • A design that works well on a small screen and loads fast on slow data.
  • A clear way to contact you. For many businesses that is a WhatsApp button on every page.
  • Your services, prices and real photos of your work.
  • Basic search set-up: a title and description on every page, one main heading per page and a sitemap, so Google can read the site.

The Kasisite home page shows how we cover these basics on every site, and our work page shows two live examples.

Questions to ask before you pay

  • Is the price fixed, or can it change once work starts?
  • Who owns the domain name?
  • What happens to my site if I stop paying the monthly fee?
  • How many changes are included after launch, and how fast are they done?
  • How quickly does the site open on a cheap phone with slow data?

Red flags:

  • A promise of a number one ranking on Google. Nobody outside Google controls rankings, so nobody can honestly guarantee one.
  • No written price and no list of what is included.
  • A domain registered in the builder's name instead of yours.
  • A monthly fee with no list of what it covers.
  • No mention of how the site looks and loads on a phone.

Most small business websites cost R5 000 to R40 000 once off at freelancers and agencies. Fixed-price studios start lower. Kasisite's Starter plan is R1 499 once off, and its Business plan is R1 199 plus R499 a month. See the pricing page for the limits.

How much does an online store cost in South Africa?

Guides put an online store at R13 000 to R60 000 to build, and large stores cost up to R200 000 or more. Payment fees are extra. PayFast charges 3.2% plus R2 per card payment and 2.0% for instant EFT.

How much does a .co.za domain cost?

A .co.za domain costs about R50 to R200 a year. A .com domain costs about R180 to R320 a year.

Do I have to pay for an SSL certificate?

Often not. Many hosts include a free Let's Encrypt SSL certificate, and many small business sites use it. Paid certificates start at about R1 299 a year.

How long does it take to build a website?

A custom build usually takes 3 to 6 weeks. Kasisite builds Starter and Business sites in 7 days and online stores in 2 to 4 weeks.

Is a cheap website worth it?

It can be, if it covers the basics: a phone-friendly design, fast pages, your contact details, a WhatsApp button and a clear list of what you sell. Be careful with deals that hide costs in the monthly fee or have no written price.

Will a new website show up on Google?

Not straight away. Google needs time to find and trust a new site, and nobody can guarantee a top ranking. A good site has a clear title and description on every page, a sitemap and fast mobile pages, and then grows with new content.
